When I returned, it was by air again, the first day of August. I had decided to rephotograph the field vicinity, using the paper cross for scale, to help estimate the amount of arable land near Suvuk. As we approached the Pinacate around eight in the morning, it looked weird from the plane. It was gleaming.

Nearby the Sonoyta River was running toward the coast. Along drainages on the east slope of Carnegie Peak, we could see stretches that sparkled, reflecting the early morning sun. It had rained enough for the Pinacate to shed some runoff!

Reaching the Romero field, we were in for a greater surprise. Below us, as we circled the water-stained valley, we could see new lines being made as the moistened earth was turned over. The Romeros had driven up from Puerto Peñasco. They had attached a plow to the bumper of their pickup. One of them was driving across the field, pulling the plow, while another walked along, guiding it and tossing seeds into the opened furrow.

Sonorans have come a long way since the digging stick.

We took our photos, waved, and hollered “Buena suerte!” out the windows as we left.
